PhD Student
Jina Lee is a Ph.D. student in Media Studies at UT Austin. She earned her B.A. in English Literature & Language and American Culture at Sogang University in Seoul, South Korea. With a background in humanities, she began to explore the intersectionality and intertextuality of Western-centered pop culture texts in Korean contexts and earned an M.A. in Mass Communications as well. Her Master’s thesis analyzes the unique qualities that K-Pop has compared to other pop culture texts in a transnational media environment, by looking at the discourse and performances provided by international fans and anti-fans. Her research interests are transnational pop culture and its audiences, currently focusing on Hallyu (the Korean Wave), K-Pop (anti-) fandoms, pop culture industries, and the new media technologies they utilize. During her doctoral studies, she aims to critically investigate the dynamics between transnational pop culture and its audiences, drawing from theoretical frameworks such as post-structuralism, deconstruction, post-colonialism, feminism, and cultural studies.
